Cusco was the capital of the Empire of the Incas, the same which were conquered by the Spaniards during the first half of the XVI Century.
In Quechua, Cusco means “bellybutton of the world” due to the fact that it was the economical, cultural and political center of the Inca Empire. At the time being, it’s architecture is a mixture between modern buildings as well as Incan and colonial monuments.
Close to Cusco there are dozens of Inca ruins such as Pisac, Chinchero and Ollantaytambo.
